PRELIMINARY REMARKS ON COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE COGNITIVE VARIABLES OF INTELLIGENCE:

MIGRATION FLOW IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, HUMAN DEVOLOPMENT AND RESOURCES FOR CAREER GUIDANCE AND EMPLOYMENT

This doctoral research analysed intelligence as a complex phenomenon, inseparable from the cultural, environmental, educational and social conditions within which an individual develops and expresses their abilities.

The study paid particular attention to sub-Saharan populations involved in Mediterranean migration flows, critically examining the use of cognitive models and assessment tools developed predominantly within Western contexts.

The thesis proposes an interdisciplinary approach in which psychology, anthropology, sociology and educational sciences contribute to an understanding of individual and intercultural differences. From this perspective, cognitive performance is not interpreted as an isolated or rigidly determined characteristic, but as the result of the interaction between mental processes, educational opportunities, experience, language, culture, adaptation and living conditions.

Research Questions

The research centred on a number of key questions:

How does the social and cultural environment contribute to the development and expression of intelligence?

What limitations may arise when psychometric tools developed in a specific context are applied to populations with different linguistic, educational and cultural experiences?

How can cognitive resources be recognised and valued in guidance pathways for study, training and work?

What role can intercultural psychology and cognitive anthropology play in developing reception and integration practices that are more firmly grounded in scientific knowledge?
